2016 was the year when the world defied expectations in every way, so let’s take a look at the most jaw-dropping ways it did so and use those valuable lessons from 2016 to rock 2017.

The 2016 Olympic Games was never put on a pedestal and the bar of expectation was relatively low from the get go. It could be triumph over low expectations but the organisers of the Olympics very narrowly avoided a disaster, which in our opinion defied everyone’s expectations, earning it a place on this list.
During the games, Rio was slammed for empty stadiums, power cuts, water pollution, scandalous doping claims, theft in the Athletes Village, Zika and largely, ignoring the poorer parts of the city. However, amidst all the hiccups, the games (for the most part) went smoothly, with the biggest headlines coming from alleged misdemeanours by foreign guests. That was a close one, Rio!
2017 Lesson to be Learned:
Plan ahead. Don’t do anything stupid because the world is always watching. And don’t forget to give back to those less fortunate. Participating in community charity events is good for the soul.

Another surprise was one of the most shocking events in sport’s history and football’s greatest Cinderella story: Leicester City defying all logic and winning the English Premier League. The odds of that happening were a staggering 5000/1.
Thanks to a monumental team effort led by players who either made their living in the lower rungs of football or who were sold by bigger clubs, Leicester continually trumped the naysayers to defeat the established forces of English football and stride to the most unlikely coronation in British history (including the royals).
It’s been rightly called the greatest team sports achievement of all time, and if you’re a football fan you know that’s not an exaggeration by any stretch of the imagination.
2017 Lesson to be Learned:
There is no I in Team! You will achieve your goals more efficiently by surrounding yourself with a team of people who have the same ethics and outlook as you. Don’t let anyone tell you it can’t be done. Defy the naysayers and reach your dreams.
THE POLITICAL UPSET OF THE CENTURY

The polls said it wouldn’t happen, the forecasts said it wouldn’t happen, even the betting markets said it wouldn’t happen. But yes, it did happen.
Donald Trump defied all odds and was elected as the President of the United States. Love him or hate him. He did it!
Donald Trump completely overturned every rule in the political book. He ransacked Twitter, didn’t adhere to the ‘conventional’ etiquette that public figures are supposed to abide by, threatened to jail his opponent and led a campaign spearheaded by aggression and controversy.
But America voted, the world watched and Trump is here to stay (well for another four years anyway).
2017 Lesson to be Learned:
Stand by your beliefs! Trump had a strategy and he appealed to a group of people who believed in his promises, as controversial as they were. If you believe in something, don’t be afraid to speak up. Although we suggest you do so with integrity and respect.
